Palm Springs Culture

Palm Springs is a haven for those celebrities wishing for a little privacy. Many retire to this community for relaxation, good weather and plenty of resorts. Therefore, this is quite a resort town with a mix of tourists and retirees.

However, the city’s culture lies in the game of golf. Palm Springs is surrounded with golf courses and is

known as the Golf Capital of the World. With more than 100 courses, it means there is more than one golf course for every one-and-a-half miles in the 150-square mile area. Without golf, the population would drop 90 percent.

Of the 3 million visitors each year, 1.2 million come to play golf or to observe the many world-class tournaments, such as the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, Frank Sinatra Celebrity Tournament or the Kraft Nabisco Championship.
Most housing developments and hotels are being built surrounding golf courses.

Palm Springs Shopping

The numerous resorts in Palm Springs offers plenty of shopping venues, including art galleries, malls, salons, department stores and street fairs. You will be able to find anything you are looking for and then some.

If you are planning an afternoon of street shopping, Palm Springs offers entire streets dedicated to those

shopaholics. One street is El Paseo—you’ll feel like you just stepped onto the streets of Beverly Hills with such high fashion and upscale merchants. Although you may not be able to afford everything this street has to offer, you’ll definitely work up an appetite moving in and out of the boutiques in the hot desert sun. Luckily, countless dining spots along El Paseo await you.

If upscale shopping is not within your budget, Palm Springs offers a street fair at the College Desert Street Fair in Palm Desert every Saturday and Sunday. Vendors sell everything from homemade crafts, foods, and antiques. There is free admission and parking.

Palm Canyon Drive also offers outdoor shopping, perfect for souvenirs or picking up something special and unique. Every Thursday night from 6-10pm, this street closes to traffic for the Palm Springs VillageFest, a street fair featuring entertainment, arts and crafts. Definitely worth checking out.
