Key West Culture

A few years ago, local artist J. T. Thompson started printing bumper stickers that read: “All people are equal members of our ONE HUMAN FAMILY.” When he began giving them away, they were snapped up by friends, visitors and total strangers. The city soon adopted “One Human Family” as Key West’s official philosophy. And perhaps no city in the US is more tolerant and accepting of any kind of imaginable lifestyle. Speculation is that this live-and-let-live

culture stems from the city’s beginnings; it was first settled in the early 1800s by renegade pirates. The stickers today remain available everywhere, free to anyone. Nearly a quarter of the city’s 28,000 year-round residents are gay or lesbian. Another reminder of Key West’s tolerance: the rainbow flag is flown everywhere.

Key West Shopping

Because it’s such a small place (population: less than 28,000), virtually every visitor finds their way to historic Duval Street. It’s not a coincidence then that this is where the best shopping can be found. Boutiques and gift shops offer virtually anything you might want and certainly many items you don’t need.

In recent years, the national chains such as

Banana Republic and Coach have set up their cash registers. But the city’s best-known bargain mecca is Fast Buck Freddie’s, a department store with wide-ranging goods that is sometimes called the “Southernmost Bloomingdale’s.” Shopping highlights include locally produced clothing available at the Key West Hand Print Fabrics store. Key West Aloe offers skin creams and cosmetics. The Key Lime Shop offers citrus fruit. The Key West Island Bookstore carries work by some of the local authors who helped make the place famous such as Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams and Ann Beattie. Mystery novels by South Florida writers are also on hand here. For an after-dinner smoke, the Key West Cigar Factory has hand-rolled items including the “El Hemingway.”

Key West is not known for its malls but the Clinton Street Market is popular for cruise passengers who don’t want to go far from their ship. The market has many boutiques and souvenir shops. Best bets here may be the candy and coffee.
