Hong Kong Culture
|
Hong Kong is a diverse area
with a population to match. The business suits that eagerly
perpetuate the hustle and bustle of commerce and trade usually
offer up apologies even if you bump into them, although they’ve
usually mastered when and where to cross so that they can
avoid wandering tourists.
On Lantau Island, you’ll quickly notice the lackadaisical,
sleepy-eyed fishermen who, after an
|
early morning’s catch, slowly exhale smoke from their cigarettes.
Meanwhile, their bubbly wives chatter in small groups while gutting
and cleaning fish. But even if you don’t purchase anything,
whether here or another area of Hong Kong, you can always count on
friendly conversation from those who stand outside of restaurants
and shops, enticing you to try their food and goods. They’ll
also gladly give you pointers on chopstick etiquette and how to pronounce
certain words in Cantonese, as long as you return the favor by helping
them out with choice phrases in English.

Hong Kong Shopping
|
Like New York, Hong Kong’s
streets are full of contrasts, and so are the shops. Fortunately,
budget travelers and high-spenders alike can enjoy the many
niche markets that Hong Kong offers. If you’re into marbled
atriums and designer boutiques, then stay near the Central shopping
district or Admiralty: The Times Square mall and places like
The Landmark, The Galleria, Prince’s Building, Alexandra
House, ifc Mall and Pacific Place are full of designer shops,
|
pricey brands and exclusive clothing wear.
But if bargain-bin finds are more your style, then you’ll
feel more at ease at Li Yuen Street East and Li Yuen Street West
in Central, where vendors sell low-cost jewelry, toys, clothing
and shoes. Head over to Mong Kok, Kowloon, and you’ll find
an eclectic mix of flower, gold fish and bird markets that provide
great gifts if you’re staying with anyone local. One of the
most popular one-stop-shopping spots, Stanley Market, is located
on Hong Kong Island. Here, you’ll find traditional Chinese
artwork, clothing and collectibles.
