There are so many things to do and see on the Big Island, and even though many
things are of walking distance some require transportation. The
Big Island offers various modes of transportation. The Hilo Sampan
bus service is one option for public transportation and a way around
the Big Island. The Sampan bus service is a fun way of getting around
the island while meeting locals and tourist on the way there. The
drivers are very friendly and usually keep a commentary along the
route for passenger’s amusement. The bus service runs Monday-
Friday with hours of operation from 9 am-5 pm. Tickets maybe purchased
directly from the driver or from various location spots on the island.
Additional forms of transportation are rent a cars, taxi’s,
and mopeds.
