Vancouver Culture

Vancouver has a thriving Asian population comprised of both natives and new immigrants, along with the third-largest Chinatown in the Americas (after San Francisco and New York). The city’s founders had to be hardy, enterprising, and adventurous, and today their descendants are no different.

The laid-back, do-your-own-thing atmosphere also draws many artists, musicians, and other creative

types, who tend to congregate in the dive bars in and around Gastown (and who wear the clothes found in its faux-vintage boutiques). Granville Island’s artsiness is glossier and more tourist-oriented, though it does have the presence of the illustrious Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design.

As you would expect in a place with so many excellent parks and beaches, Vancouver’s population is generally outdoorsy and fit. On summer evenings you’ll find athletic twentysomethings diving for balls on the sandy volleyball courts on the north side of Cambie Bridge, and there are always plenty of joggers and cyclists traversing Stanley Park’s Sea Wall.

Vancouver Shopping

The shopping along Robson Street is relatively upscale—designer clothing, art and craft galleries, jewelry stores and chocolatiers. The shops get funkier in Gastown, along Alexander and Water Streets, where you can kick back with a cold drink at any of the great bars and restaurants afterwards (duck inside Gaoler’s Mews on Water Street, the most charming little spot in the city, which hosts a very good Italian restaurant with live jazz, Sapori). East of Gastown

along East Pender Street, Chinatown offers the customary shops and daily market. Trendy shops and cafés abound in the Kitsilano section, southwest of downtown, along 4th Avenue and many of its side-streets. On Granville Island there are plenty of art and craft galleries, and don’t miss the public market.

If it’s a mall you’re after, head to the Pacific center (550-700 West Georgia Street; 604-688-7236), located underground between Granville and Howe Streets. There’s music, clothes, electronics, a food court, and everything else you’d expect.
