Rio de Janeiro.
Cidade Maravilhosa.

With long stretches of beach, lush vegetation, spectacular mountains and a ceaseless beat pulsing through the city, it is no wonder Rio de Janeiro is known as the “Cidade Maravilhosa” (Marvelous City). The giant Christ statue atop Corcovado undoubtedly “blessed” Rio with breathtaking natural scenery, beautiful people and a laid-back lifestyle that keeps tourists coming back.

Maracanã and the Jockey Club for sports fans, the Botanical Garden and the Zoo in Quinta da Boa Vista Park for the ecology enthusiasts, miles of oceanfront for beach lovers, and the amazing Corcovado Mountain and Guanabara Bay for everyone else. The possibilities are endless, even for repeat visitors.

Besides its physical attributes, the natives of Rio (locally referred to as Cariocas) are also an exciting characteristic of the city. Full of life and energy, the Cariocas help Rio live up to its reputation. Great variety exists among the cariocas, from the less advantaged favelados (inhabitants of the favelas, or shantytowns) to the middle and upper class “patricinhas” and “playboys” (the nicknames given to middle and upper class girls and boys used to a more affluent lifestyle.)

Though Rio is known for its many tourist attractions, its poverty and violence also have gained attention. Though theft can be problem in the city, with the proper precautions you can minimize or eliminate your chances of confrontation and let yourself enjoy the numerous events, views and experiences Rio has to offer.
