More than 4.4 million people
may inhabit Singapore, but the country is only slightly more
than 3.5 times the size of Washington, D.C. It's also considered
a “young” country, not only because it formally
gained independence in 1965, but because its median age falls
around 37 and only 8% of Singaporeans are over the age of 65.
Though Singaporeans largely follow the Buddhist tradition, with
43% believing in this faith, other major religions include Islam
(15%), |
Christianity (10%), Taoism (9%), Catholicism (5%) and Hinduism
(4%). Still, English remains the second most commonly used language
(after Mandarin), and many Singaporeans rely on Malay, Hokkien,
Cantonese, Teochew or Tamil to communicate.
