Constructed in 1540, the fortress of El Morro still stands tall
regardless of its attack by the English and Dutch. The fortress
has some of the most amazing views. When visiting El Morro you have
to see it’s labyrinth of dungeons, barracks, vaults, and ramps.
The historical background and significance of this fort is provided
by a video in English and Spanish. If you are lucky, a park ranger
will lead hour long tours for free, but the best way to experience
this piece of history is to get lost in it and see it all on your
own pace. The original fort was a round tower, and still can be
seen deep inside the lower levels of the castle. Reconstruction
of the fortress added more walls and cannon firing positions. This
is a great place to take your kids, especially since they can run
around while learning a few fun facts of Puerto Rico’s history.
