For those interested in the lifestyle of the Maori culture, be
sure to put a stop at Te Puia on your itinerary.
At Te Puia, be introduced to the song and dance of the indigenous
people through a traditional performance. A welcome begins the start
of 45 minutes of song and dance inside a sacred meetinghouse. You
will be surrounded by carvings of Maori ancestors and other beautiful
artwork. During the performance, hear perfect harmonies, a seductive
Poi dance and a fiery war dance.
After this performance, attend the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts
Institute. Only 12 fulltime students study here and learn the art
of carving, but visitors are free to visit the school to watch and
talk with the carvers.
At Te Puia, you will also find a weaving school. Many Maori of
all ages are taught this craft. Please feel free to talk and listen
to stories of the Maori’s works. Tourism is vital to keep
this practical training alive.
