Sangeh
Sangeh is a destination for people of all ages. Can you imagine being surrounded
by tall nutmeg trees and then being engulfed by a circle of monkeys?
Sangeh is a famous Monkey Forest. Walk around the forest and you
will see hundreds of monkeys waiting to greet you. According to
legend the monkeys are descended from the monkey king Hanuman and
are therefore sacred. They are venerated in the Pura Bukit Sari,
a temple in the forest which probably dates from the 17th century.
Visit the Monkey Forest late in the day after the tourist are away,
this will allow you to appreciate the serenity of the place. Also,
be careful because the monkeys at the forest are sometimes fairly
aggressive, especially the females. When walking through the forest
make sure you keep your cameras, wallets, and any other valuables
close by, because the monkeys will not have a problem trying to
snatch it away from you. Enjoy your walk and try not to monkey around
with the animals they can get irritated.
