As the largest living organism in the world, the Great Barrier Reef is a must-see
for any Australian tourist. Various companies offer trips out to
sea to experience the natural beauty of coral, exquisite tropical
fish in every color imaginable, and an incomparable underwater life.
Trips range from a simple one-day taste of the reef to full-blown
scuba diving certification excursions. Some companies even let you
live on an island in the ocean for a few days. Most of these trips
dock from the northern part of Australia—usually Cairns or
Port Douglas. Companies will supply the food and all gear necessary.
If you are a little timid of the underworld or of swimming in general,
you can try snorkeling—a less expensive option. Trained divers
will take you out to a point of the reef where you can swim and
explore on your own. Snorkeling allows you to have more freedom
with discovery than does scuba diving (in which you would stick
with a group of people throughout the dive).
Prices vary depending on length and type of trip, see website for
details.
