Located just a few minutes from the Boardwalk, the tallest lighthouse in New
Jersey offers beautiful views for those willing to climb up its
228 steps. The lighthouse was first built 1855 and took two years
to complete. It was not officially lit until 1857. The lighthouse
was extinguished from July 11, 1933 until October 03, 1999 when
it was re-lit. The structure holds two dwellings, an oil storage
house and outhouses.
The lighthouse was originally constructed because Dr. Jonathan
Pitney, later called the "Father of Atlantic City," was
concerned about the loss of ships and lives along Absecon Beach.
Many vessels were lost between the Great and Little Egg Harbors;
therefore, Pitney believed it was necessary to protect these ships
from the water’s danger.
Today the lighthouse holds fundraising events to keep it lit. Such
events include murder mysteries, children’s art contents,
garden parties and wine tastings. In December, there is a Victorian
holiday event when the lighthouse turns into a Victorian home and
plays host to visitors who can treat themselves to holiday goodies
and caroling.
