One of the best historic gold mining sites in Alaska, Gold Dredge is a 1928
mine that allows visitors to play around and scoop for gold. Standing
five decks tall on a barge in a pond, Gold Dredge operates by scooping
up gravel from one end, and then the inside mechanism would digest
the gold from the gravel, and would dump the spoils out the back.
The tour company that bought the historic site added a museum to
the dredge that displayed gold camp buildings, which showed the
harsh colorless life lived by the miners. The 90-minute tour starts
off with a movie, and then moves onto a half hour on the dredge,
and then finally gives visitors a chance to pan for gold themselves.
It’s a fun little tour that will have you hoping to find some
real authentic gold nuggets.
